Sean played his junior football for the Glen Innes Falcons a feeder club of Ellerslie.
He then played for the Northcote Tigers in the Auckland Rugby League during the late 80's and early '90s. Sean played for the Auckland team in a preseason game against the Canberra Raiders in 1992 which resulted in Sean signing a contract with the Raiders and moving to Australia before the end of 1992.
During 1992 and 1993 Sean played 39 games and scored 22 tries for the Raiders, However, at the end of the 1993 season, it was announced that Sean was to join the Auckland Warriors in 1995. Sean was off contract at the end of 1993 and the Raiders weren't prepared to offer just a one year contract for 1994. So Sean was able to secure a one year deal with the North Sydney Bears playing a total of 25 games and scoring 15 tries.
Sean scored 19 tries for the Warriors in 1995 which was a club record for tries in a season until the 2003 season when Francis Meli scored 23.
He was released by the Warriors towards the end of the 1999 season after which he joins St Helens in the Superleague. Sean played 98 games and scored 36 tries between 1999 - 2002 for St Helens.
